Wall Sconce

#woodworking #3dprinting

In May, I started sketching designs for light fixtures. Some more creative than others, but I eventually sketched out a sconce that seemed interesting and within my abilities to build. The body of the sconce is simple enough: a round pedestal and two pill shaped planks that hold a lamp shade in place.

The lamp shade took some iteration: initially I thought to use papaer with visible fibers. But, charitably it looks like rough papier-mâché. So, I decided to try 3D printing a shade with matte white PLA. Ultimately, the shade ended up being 3 pieces that I glued together. The reflection of the shade provides an interesting effect and is sufficiently diffuse.

The back of the fixture looks a bit like Homer's back fat, but would be improved in a future iteration.

The initial design was made by hand and without measurements going in. I decided to get the base of the sconce CNC'd. So, I've had 1 of 3 wood pieces with a corresponding 3D file. It's been on my list to finish the other 2 pieces, with some minor improvements; mainly to improve alignment between the wooden parts and the shades. Linked below is a f3d file including all 3 parts. Note: I've yet to test out this model. Please get it touch if you use it!

For future, I'd like to add a print profile for the shades using vase mode with a fuzzy skin; and include a full bill of materials including the socket and fasteners.
